Justice Sanjiv Khanna takes oath Today (11.11.2024) as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). Known for his judicious approach and deep understanding of constitutional law, Justice Khanna will succeed Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.
Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019 and has since been a part of several landmark judgments and constitutional benches. He is known for his balanced approach, Justice Khanna has made substantial contributions to issues involving human rights, constitutional interpretation, and civil liberties.
He is a prominent judge of the Supreme Court of India, known for his contributions to the Indian jurisprudence. His law practice began at 1983 in the areas of taxation, arbitration, commercial and environmental matters among other things. Justice Khanna was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made permanent judge one year later. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.

Among his many contributions, Justice Khanna has been part of important cases on electoral reform, privacy rights, and judicial accountability. He was part of the bench that delivered the landmark judgment in the Essar Steel insolvency case, clarifying the role of financial and operational creditors under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and in case which struck down Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalized adultery, stating that the law was archaic and violated the constitutional right to equality.
