S Ramesh appointed as CBIC Chairman

CBIC - GST

Senior bureaucrat S Ramesh was appointed as chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ) on Saturday as the current Chairman Vanaja N Sarna retires from the post this month-end.

Ramesh, a 1981 batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (customs and central excise), is at present member in the CBIC, an apex policy making body for indirect taxes.

The appointments committee of cabinet has approved Ramesh’s appointment. The appointment comes at a time when the Centre is gearing up to dispose Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) refund to exporters.

CBIC is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise.

Reportedly, Vanaja N saran may be appointed as Chairperson of Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) after her superannuation this month. This may be the reason why Mrs Sarna was not given an extension this time unlike her counterpart in CBDT.

Presently, Dr. Ajay Bhushan pandey, CEO, UIDAI is holding additional charge of the post of GSTN Chairman.
