On November 12, 2024, the Government of India approved the appointment of two senior Indian Revenue Service ( IRS ) officers, Mohan Kumar Singh and Yogendra Garg, as members of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ).
Mohan Kumar Singh was from the 1989 IRS batch and has a deep background in both engineering and tax administration. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Roorkee and a Master’s in Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering from IIT Delhi, Singh began his career in the Indian Railway Service of Engineers before joining the IRS. He has served in important tax administration roles across cities such as Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Indore, Pune, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
Singh’s tenure includes huge contributions in Central Excise Intelligence and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence ( DRI ). As Director of International Customs within the CBEC, Singh worked on collaborations with global organizations, including the World Customs Organization ( WCO ) and World Trade Organization (WTO), and managed Free Trade Agreements ( FTAs ).

He also served internationally as the First Secretary (Trade) at the High Commission of India in London, representing India’s trade interests abroad. In recognition of his great service, he received the Presidential Award in 2011. His new role as a member of CBIC will commence on December 1, 2024.
Yogendra Garg, a 1990 batch IRS officer, got a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Punjab Engineering College and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
As Principal Director General of Systems & Data Management, Garg has led the integration of technology in tax systems particularly in GST and e-filing processes. Appointed Director General of Systems & Data Management in August 2023, Garg has been focused on implementing digital solutions within CBIC. His new role as a member of CBIC will commence on January 1, 2025.
