CBI Arrests CGST Officials in Bribery Case Linked to GST ITC Mismatch
This case underscores the continuing challenges of corruption within tax administration, particularly in the enforcement of GST compliance.

Recently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) in Giridih on charges of demanding and accepting bribes from a taxpayer. The arrests were made on Wednesday after the officials were allegedly caught red‑handed while accepting part of the illegal gratification.
According to the CBI, the case was registered based on a complaint filed by a GST registrant who alleged that the two officers demanded an undue advantage of ₹90,000. The bribe was purportedly sought to “resolve” an Input Tax Credit (ITC) mismatch in the complainant’s records.

The complainant further stated that the officials threatened to block his GSTregistration number if he failed to comply with the demand.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the accused while they were accepting ₹50,000 as part payment of the total bribe amount. Following the arrests, searches were conducted at both the officials' office and residential premises. Investigators confirmed that incriminating documents and materials were seized during the operation.
