GST comrnissionerate, Ludhiana arrested a gang for evading E-way bill, Times of India reported.

According to reports, It is perhaps for the first time in the country that a gang has been identified that is misusing the provision of cancelling the e-way bill within 24 hours to evade tax. The busting of this network made the department check the state and national highways, which were earlier left to the state taxation department.

Reports said that a gang of businessmen based in Mandi Gobindgarh facilitated consignment of goods from Mandi Gobindgarh, Khanna and Ludhiana to other places in Punjab without E-Way Bill and paying taxes

The gang used to generate genuine e-way bills and sale invoices for vehicles in which the goods were to be transported. But when the goods reached the destination, they would cancel the e-way bill and the sale invoice. Under the provisions of e-way bill, cancellation is allowed within 24 hours of generation. The facilitators of this network took up contract of only those cities and towns where the delivery of goods could be made within 24 hours.

The strategy was revealed in an investigation carried out by the department officials. One of the culprits, a Mandi Gobindgarh resident, was recently summoned by the department and he admitted to running a racket and also shared names of other facilitators who are now on the department’s radar.

Ashutosh Baranwal, Central GST commissioner, Ludhiana, who has jurisdiction of over 14 districts in the state, said, “The anti-evasion team busted the network and has identified several people associated with it. Appropriate action is being taken against them.”
