Government Extends CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra’s Tenure for 1 Year

The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has today approved the extension in reemployment of the current Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT ) Sushil Chandra for a further period of one year. He was given one-year extension till May 2019.

This is the second time he is getting such an extension. Last year also, the Government had extended his employment for one year.

Sushil Kumar Chandra, 1980-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) was appointed as the CBDT Chairman on 1st November 2016 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister. He succeeded Rani Singh Nair.

The officer is credited with getting the I-T department success under the one-time black money window, also known as the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS). An IIT Graduate Chandra, was to retire by end of May.

The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members. It is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and income tax department.
