Recently, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) through Notification No. 08/2017 dated 20.02.2017 exempted the services by the operators of Common Effluent Treatment Plant from the service tax net for the period, 01.07.2012 to 31.03.2015.
The notification said “according to a practice that was generally prevalent there was non levy of service tax on the services by the operators of Common Effluent Treatment Plant by way of treatment of effluent and this service was liable to service tax, in the said period, it was not being paid according to the said practice.”
It was therefore, directed by the Central government that the service tax the services by the operators of Common Effluent Treatment Plant for the said period is not required to be paid.
