GSTN issues Advisory for Biometric-Based Aadhaar Authentication and Document Verification for GST Registration Applicants of U.P.

Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has recently undertaken a significant move to streamline the GST registration processes, introducing a new verification mechanism for applicants from Uttar Pradesh (U.P.).

As per the advisory date 16 March, 2025, GST registration applicants may now be identified on the GST portal using data analysis and risk parameters, requiring them to complete biometric-based Aadhaar authentication. They will also need to provide a photograph and present the original copies of documents uploaded with the application.

Implementation Date and Process

The new functionality has been developed by GSTN and has been rolled out in Uttar Pradesh from March 15, 2025. The feature also introduces document verification and an appointment booking system for applicants identified for biometric authentication.

Steps in the New Authentication Process

Upon submitting Form GST REG-01, an applicant will receive an email containing either:

A link for OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication, allowing the applicant to continue the registration as per the existing process or another link to book an appointment at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) for biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification. This email shall also contain details of the designated GSK and jurisdiction.

Biometric Authentication Appointment Booking Process

The appointment booking feature for biometric authentication at GSKs shall be made available to applicants in Uttar Pradesh from March 18, 2025. Once an appointment is booked, the applicant will receive an appointment confirmation email and they shall be required to visit the designated GSK on the scheduled date.

Documents Required

To undertake the biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification process at the GST Suvidha Kendra, the applicant must bring:

  1. A hard/soft copy of the appointment confirmation email. This serves as proof of the scheduled appointment and ensures that the applicant is attending the correct GSK at the designated time.
  2. Jurisdiction details as mentioned in the intimation email. The Jurisdiction details shall assist in verifying the applicant’s assigned jurisdiction, ensuring that they are reporting to the correct GSK based on their application details.
  3. Original Aadhaar Card and PAN Card. The Aadhaar card is specifically needed for biometric authentication, while the PAN card is essential for tax-related verification.
  4. Original copies of all documents uploaded with the application, as specified in the intimation email. The original documents shall be compared and verified with the documents uploaded on the portal.

Applicants must schedule their biometric verification appointment within the maximum permissible period mentioned in the intimation email. Application Reference Numbers (ARNs) will only be generated after successfully completing biometric authentication and document verification at the designated GST Suvidha Kendra. The operational days and hours of GSKs shall be as per the guidelines set by the state administration.
