For the fiscal year 2024–2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT ) collected 92,400 crore in unpaid taxes until March 15. This covers tax withheld at the source, personal income tax, and corporation tax. By March 31, officials said, the total amount of reclaimed tax might reach ₹1 lakh crore as more taxpayers are anticipated to file amended forms.

In addition to ₹67,711 crore in corporate tax, there were also ₹23,536 crore in personal income tax and ₹1,100 crore in nonpayment of tax withheld at the source. The income-tax authorities filed demand notifications, but the recovery was made in their place. In 2023–2024, tax authorities collected ₹75,000 crore in unpaid taxes.

A special team comprising the main commissioner of income tax was formed to give analytics on cases falling within the “top 5,000” defined by the CBDT, while field personnel were ordered to work on cases that did not fall under the “difficult to recover” category. The CBDT will work with other investigative organizations starting next year to find missing taxpayers.
