India has marked a significant milestone in the floriculture export arena, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Mizoram facilitating the first-ever export of Anthurium flowers from Mizoram to Singapore. India has marked a significant milestone in the floriculture export arena, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Mizoram facilitating the first-ever export of Anthurium flowers from Mizoram to Singapore.

The consignment, containing 1,024 Anthurium flowers weighing 70 kg and packed in 50 corrugated boxes, were exported by IVC Agrovet Pvt. Ltd. from Aizawl, Mizoram, to Singapore via Kolkata. The shipment was sourced from the Zo Anthurium Growers Cooperative Society in Mizoram and imported by Veg Pro Singapore Pte. Ltd.

The Anthurium and Mizoram’s Budding Floriculture

Anthurium, a popular ornamental flower known for its long shelf life and vibrant colors, is one of the key floriculture products cultivated in Mizoram. The region's cool climate, high humidity, and rich biodiversity make it an ideal location for floriculture, providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers, especially women.

Mizoram has long been recognized for its floriculture potential, hosting the annual “Anthurium Festival”, which promotes both tourism and the commercial value of the flower. The success of this export initiative is expected to boost employment and economic growth in the region.

APEDA’s Efforts and India’s Market Expansion

The export follows the International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet (IBSM), organized by APEDA and the Mizoram government in Aizawl on December 6, 2024. The event saw participation from nine international buyers from Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Jordan, Oman, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ethiopia, along with 24 domestic exporters, highlighting India’s potential in global floriculture markets.

India has steadily emerged as a significant player in the global floriculture market, with exports reaching USD 86.62 million in FY 2023-24. The country’s diverse agro-climatic conditions, skilled labor force, and growing investment in floriculture have contributed to its success in the international flower trade. India exports a variety of floriculture products, including cut flowers such as roses, carnations, gerberas, orchids, and anthuriums, along with potted plants, foliage, floral extracts, and essential oils. The major export destinations include the USA, the Netherlands, UAE, UK, Germany, Singapore, and Japan.

APEDA has played a key role in boosting floriculture exports by increasing networking opportunities for market players, facilitating international certifications, providing financial assistance for post-harvest infrastructure, and collaborating with state governments to promote floriculture clusters in key regions like Mizoram, Sikkim, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

The consignment was officially flagged off at a hybrid (phygital) event on February 26, 2025 which was attended by APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, and Special Secretary, Department of Horticulture, Government of Mizoram, Ramdinliani. Officials from APEDA, the Department of Horticulture, Zo Anthurium Growers Cooperative Society, IVC Agrovet Pvt. Ltd., and Veg Pro Singapore Pte. Ltd. were also present at the event.
