The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority ( APEDA ) and the Basmati Export Development Foundation ( BEDF ) organized a program to mark the export of 30 metric tons ( MT ) of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged jaggery from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, to Bangladesh.

Muzaffarnagar, known as the "Sugar Bowl of India," is renowned for producing high-quality sugarcane, which contributes to the superior taste and texture of its jaggery. The region's fertile soil, favorable climate, and advanced farming practices make it a prime hub for sugarcane-based products.

This shipment marks the first direct export of jaggery from Western Uttar Pradesh to Bangladesh, facilitated through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs). The initiative aligns with APEDA’s vision to empower local farmers by connecting them with global markets, ensuring that they directly benefit from international trade.

Speaking at the event, MLA Prasanna Chaudhary from Shamli praised the high demand for jaggery produced in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli in international markets. He applauded APEDA’s role in streamlining the export process and emphasized the need for government support to maintain global quality standards.

Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company (FPC), which has 545 farmer members, including two women directors played a key role in the export process who was provided ₹4 lakh financial assistance under Uttar Pradesh’s Agri Export Policy, making Brijnandan Agro the only FPO in the state to receive such funding.

BEDF who provided the technical training and capacity-building programs necessary for the farmers to meet global agricultural standards. The organization also conducted an export promotion program for Basmati rice and other agricultural products, attended by 220 farmers.

The flag-off event was attended by MLA, Shamli, Shri Prasanna Chaudhary; Joint Director, BEDF (APEDA), Dr. Ritesh Sharma; AAMO, Saharanpur Division, Shri Rahul Yadav; and Chairman, Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company, Shri Sandeep Chaudhary.
