The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman presided over the 50th meeting of the GST Council today (11th July 2023) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi including Revenue Secretary, CBIC chairman.

The goods and services tax (GST) council resolved to lower the levy on meals sold in movie theatres from 18% to 5%. 

The entire supply should be classified as a composite supply and taxed in accordance with the appropriate rate of the major supply, in this case a movie ticket, if the sale of movie tickets and the supply of eatables like popcorn or cold beverages, etc. are combined and sold together.

Currently, movie tickets costing less than 100 rupees are subject to a 12.5% tax, while those costing more than that are subject to an 18.5% GST.

Finally at 50th GST Council meeting, the GST Council decided to reduce the tax to 5% on uncooked and unfried snacks in the cinema hall .
