Entertainment tax is a levy imposed by state governments on entertainment-related activities, including movies, theatre performances, and other shows. In the case of films, the tax is typically applied to the sale of tickets, and the rates can vary across states.
Post-GST, entertainment tax has largely been subsumed under GST, with a fixed rate of 18% for movie tickets priced below ₹100 and 28% for tickets priced above ₹100.
The exemption of entertainment tax for The Sabarmati Report is expected to result in a surge in viewership, particularly in the states where the movie is tax-free. Reduced ticket prices lower the financial barrier for audiences, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, helping greater accessibility.
