AI-Powered Tax Evasion Detection Implemented in Tripura: CM Manik Saha

Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, announced on Saturday that the state is now using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify tax evaders. According to PTI, he made this announcement during the GST ‘Jaagrookta Abhiyan’ event at Prajna Bhavan. The Chief Minister explained the important role of tax collection in accelerating the development of the northeastern state.

He pointed out that out of Tripura’s annual budget of Rs. 27,800 crore for the financial year 2024-25, the state’s own revenue stands at Rs. 3,700 crore. After meeting non-plan expenses like salaries, pensions, and loan interests, only Rs. 10,000 crore remains. The state needs to allocate 25% of its own revenue to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and 10% to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

The Chief Minister explained the importance of increasing tax collection to prevent evasion. He stated that development depends on tax collection and that the government is taking all possible steps to ensure the building of more infrastructure. Instances of tax evasion through fake input tax credits and misuse of the GST Analytics & Intelligence Network (GAIN) have been noted. To achieve this, the tax department has introduced AI to prevent misuse of the existing system.

Saha urged the people to pay GST, stating that they are “partners” in the state’s growth. He highlighted the need to bring those who skip GST into the tax system, as funds are required to accelerate development and infrastructure building. He mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047 and stressed that achieving this goal requires each state to be developed by 2047.

The Chief Minister also observed that the taxation system has been integrated since the introduction of GST, and the department has started using AI-enabled analytics tools to identify tax evasion and take necessary steps. He warned that tax evaders would face the law if they continue their old practices, as the system has been strengthened.
