A superintendent from the Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) department was recently caught accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from a businessman by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in India. Ranjit Kumar Krishna Kumar Sah, who works as a superintendent in the CGST Range 3 office in Nanpura, was caught red-handed under a flyover on a road near Delhi Gate.

The accused official had demanded the bribe from the complainant to process an online application for the GST registration number, which had been pending for the past 20 days. The complainant had applied for Central Goods and Services Tax registration online and had submitted the necessary documents. However, the accused demanded Rs 3,000 for document verification and a positive report. When the complainant was unable to pay Rs 3,000, he agreed to pay Rs 1,500.

Sah, a class II officer and a native of Bihar, has completed 14 years of service in the GST and central excise department. His current monthly salary is Rs 1.14 lakh. The Anti Corruption Bureau arrested Sah for accepting the bribe.

This incident raises questions about the corrupt practices of some government officials in India. It is important to note that the online process for CGST registration does not require applicants to meet officers, and therefore, bribes should not be demanded or accepted.

Such actions by government officials tarnish the image of the government and adversely affect the public’s trust in the system. The ACB’s prompt action in catching the accused is commendable and sends a strong message to others who might be engaging in similar corrupt practices.

In conclusion, the ACB’s action against the accused CGST superintendent sends a strong message that corrupt practices will not be tolerated, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those who engage in them. The incident highlights the need for stricter regulations and measures to prevent such corrupt practices in the future.
