Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa is facing legal trouble after an arrest warrant was issued against him for allegedly failing to deposit Employees’ Provident Fund ( EPF ) contributions. The case involves unpaid funds deducted from employees' salaries at companies where he was a director.
The warrant was issued by regional provident fund commissioner Shadakshara Gopala Reddy, directing the Pulakeshinagar Police in Bengaluru to arrest Uthappa and produce him before the authorities by December 27, 2024.
Uthappa is accused of not depositing Rs. 23.36 lakh in EPF contributions and of additional recovery charges of Rs. 6,550. The issue is linked to three companies: Strawberry Lencería Pvt. Ltd., Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt. Ltd., and Berryz Fashion House, where Uthappa was a director. Authorities claim that despite several notices, the dues were not paid, which has prevented workers from accessing their provident funds.

The arrest warrant invokes Rule 73 of the Second Schedule to the Income Tax Act, 1961, and Section 8B of the Employees’ Provident Funds Act, 1952. Authorities argue that the non-payment of dues has significantly affected workers, necessitating legal action.
Robin Uthappa’s Released Statement on Social Media
Robin Uthappa released a statement to explain his side of the story. He said he was appointed as a director in the companies only because he had given them loans, and he had no role in running the businesses.
“In 2018-19, I became a director in these companies because of my financial contributions in the form of loans. I did not have an active role or manage the day-to-day operations of these businesses,” Uthappa said.
He added that his busy career as a cricketer, TV presenter, and commentator meant he did not have the time or expertise to manage the companies. He also shared that he resigned from these directorships years ago and has filed legal cases against the companies for failing to repay the loans he gave them.
“When the Provident Fund authorities sent notices asking for payment, my legal team replied with proof showing that I had no role in the companies. We even provided documents from the companies confirming my lack of involvement. Despite this, the authorities are continuing the proceedings,” he explained.
