The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption of Assam police apprehended a government official for accepting a bribe. The official, identified as Minakshi Kakati Kalita, is an Assistant Commissioner of State Tax at the Office of the Commissioner, State GST, Assam.
According to Rajib Saikia, the CPRO of Assam Police, a complaint was lodged at the Directorate, alleging that Minakshi Kakati Kalita had demanded Rs 10,000/- from the complainant to reactivate GST online functions.
Eventually, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 8,000/-. The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, reported the matter to the Directorate for legal action.
Consequently, a trap was set inside KAR BHAWAN, Office of the Commissioner, State GST, Assam. Minakshi Kakati Kalita was caught red-handed accepting Rs 4,000/-, a part of the demanded bribe. The tainted money was recovered from her possession in the presence of independent witnesses.
The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam has gathered sufficient evidence against the accused official, leading to her arrest. A case was registered in the ACB Police Station on May 18, 2023, under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), against Minakshi Kakati Kalita. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
During a search at Minakshi Kakati Kalita’s residence, the team of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption discovered a sum of Rs 65,37,500/-.
