The Bengaluru civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ( BBMP ) has introduced 'garbage tax' under which the residents of Bengaluru have to pay a “solid waste management user” fee from 1st April, 2025. The initiative has been taken by the government to improve the waste collection and disposal across the city. The government aims to generate Rs. 685 crores through this initiative in the current fiscal year.

The fees would be determined by the city's building area. Additionally, other taxes are imposed on stores, residences, and lodging facilities. Hotels that formerly paid Rs 5 per kg of waste would now pay Rs 12 per kg. Together with the property tax, the waste tax will be paid each year and distributed among the residents.

Each residential building up to 600 square feet would be subject to a monthly user fee of Rs. 10. In contrast, the commercial building charges Rs. 12 per kilogram of rubbish. Every year, the user fee will rise by 5%.

A monthly user fee of Rs. 400 will be collected from each residence in buildings that are 4,000 square feet or larger. The garbage fee follows price increases for necessities like milk, energy, and public transportation.
