The Bar Council of India (BCI) has called upon all Bar Associations and legal professionals to refrain from protests and strikes in light of the government’s commitment to revise the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This assurance follows extensive consultations between the BCI and the Ministry of Law & Justice, led by Hon'ble Union Law Minister, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal.

The BCI expressed its gratitude towards the Union Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, for its transparent and inclusive legislative process. The Ministry of Law & Justice officially communicated its decision to conclude the initial consultation process and reprocess the draft bill for further consultation, as detailed in the press brief issued on February 22, 2025.

Chairman of the Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra, confirmed that the Hon'ble Law Minister has assured the BCI that all contentious issues will be thoroughly examined and appropriately addressed before finalizing the bill. This move ensures that the autonomy, independence, and dignity of the legal profession are safeguarded.

The BCI praised the government’s proactive stance in considering the concerns raised by advocates nationwide. This decision reflects the government’s willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue and align reforms in legal education and practice with the interests of legal professionals.

In a statement, the BCI urged all Bar Associations and advocates to resume court work from Monday, February 24, 2025. The council assured advocates that their rights, privileges, and professional independence remain its top priority, and it will continue to actively engage with the government to address all genuine concerns of the legal community.

As the government takes serious note of the legal fraternity's suggestions, the BCI remains committed to ensuring that amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961, are made in the best interests of the legal profession.
