The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recently said that the Income Tax Department has attached benami assets worth Rs 1,833 crore so far as part of its “sustained action plan” against such properties.

CBDT chairman Mr. Sushil Chandra told to the PTI that the I-T department would continue taking strong action against benami asset holders under its sustained action plan.

“I can assure you that this probe will not end. We are obtaining more data and information from all available avenues on such assets. More such instances and assets will be identified and strong legal action will be taken”, he said.

It has already been registered such cases around 136. Out of these 93 cases from Bhopal, 76 from Karnataka and Goa, 72 from Chennai, 62 from Jaipur, in Mumbai 62 and in Delhi 55.

During a recent election rally in Himachal Pradesh Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned about the benami properties in connection with demonetization.

The Income Tax department had warned people against depositing their unaccounted bank notes in accounts maintained by someone else at the time of withdrawal of 500 and 1000 rupee notes on November 8. The department started actions under the new Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 from November 1 onwards. And the law ensures maximum punishment.
