The Bengaluru Advocates Association ( BAA ) has announced a General Body Meeting to discuss key issues concerning judicial ethics and recent legal controversies, including the Delhi High Court judge corruption allegations, the Karnataka honey-trapping scandal, and broader concerns about judicial corruption. The meeting is scheduled to take place on March 25, 2025, at 4:00 PM at the Advocates Association Hall in Bengaluru.

The decision to hold this discussion comes in the wake of the Allahabad Bar Association’s strong criticism of the Supreme Court Collegium’s transfer of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma after a fire at his residence led to the discovery of ₹15 crore in unaccounted cash. The Collegium decided to shift Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court, a move that has sparked backlash from the legal fraternity.

Key Topics of Discussion

According to the meeting notice issued by BAA President Vivek Subha Reddy on March 21, 2025, the association will deliberate on several pressing matters:

Delhi High Court Judge Controversy: The association will discuss the case involving Justice Yashwant Varma, who was transferred to the Allahabad High Court after a fire at his residence revealed a large amount of unaccounted cash. The matter has raised concerns about judicial accountability and the Collegium’s handling of such cases.

Karnataka Honey-Trapping Scandal: The recent revelations regarding a honey-trap scandal involving politicians, judges, and bureaucrats will also be a major point of discussion. The scandal surfaced after Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi alleged that over 400 officials, including senior leaders and judges, have been victims of blackmail. The scandal has triggered calls for a judicial or CBI inquiry, with opposition leaders alleging that a senior Congress leader orchestrated the scheme for political gains.

Judicial Corruption and Bar’s Role: The association will address wider concerns regarding judicial corruption and the role of the legal fraternity in upholding ethical standards. The allegations against Justice Varma have intensified debates on the need for reforms in judicial appointments, oversight mechanisms, and accountability.
