A 45-year-old Chartered Accountant named Ashish Roy, also known as Ashish Saxena, has been arrested for allegedly deceiving 11 private companies by providing them with fake electronic bank guarantees worth Rs 168 crore, according to Bengaluru police reports on Wednesday.

Roy, a resident of Noida, was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi by immigration officials upon his return from Kuwait. This arrest followed a lookout notice issued against him by Bengaluru Police in February.

The investigation into this case began after an official from National E-Governance Services Limited reported a case of cheating. It was discovered that the e-bank guarantees submitted by these companies were counterfeit.

Further inquiry revealed that Roy exploited his professional network by approaching chartered accountants and financial advisers of these companies, promising them e-bank guarantee certificates in exchange for a commission of Rs five crore. The scheme was allegedly orchestrated from Kuwait, with the assistance of an accomplice who is currently evading authorities.

Among the affected companies, nine are based in Bengaluru. Police found two laptops, six mobile phones, and 10 cheque books from various bank accounts in Roy’s possession, highlighting the sophisticated nature of the fraud.
