The income tax department has provided advisory on reporting and identifying Phishing, Fraudulent Refund Email Scams and Fake Income Tax Websites
The Department has issued a stern advisory to taxpayers and citizens, warning against fraudulent emails claiming to provide access to e-PAN cards. These emails are part of phishing scams designed to steal sensitive financial and personal information.
Do Not Respond to Suspicious Emails
- The Income Tax Department never requests detailed personal information via email.
- They do not send emails asking for PIN numbers, passwords, or access details for credit cards, banks, or other financial accounts.
Advisory on Handling Such Emails
- Not Reply: Refrain from engaging with the sender.
- Avoid Opening Attachments: Attachments may contain malicious software that can infect your computer.
- Do Not Click on Links: Links in these emails often lead to phishing websites designed to capture your sensitive information. If you clicked on a link, avoid entering any personal or financial details.
- Avoid Copying Links: Phishers can create deceptive links that appear legitimate but redirect you to fraudulent websites.

Stay Protected:
- Use updated anti-virus software, anti-spyware, and firewalls to safeguard your devices.

How to Report when you receive such Emails
If you encounter a suspicious email or website impersonating the Income Tax Department, follow these steps:
Forward the Email or Website URL:
- Send it to webmanager@incometax.gov.in.
- You can also forward a copy to incident@cert-in.org.in.
Include Internet Headers:
- Forward the email as received or include the Internet header, which contains information that helps locate the sender.

Delete the Message:
- After reporting, ensure the suspicious email is deleted from your inbox.
For phishing emails unrelated to the Income Tax Department, report them directly to incident@cert-in.org.in.
