In a recent development, the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), has raised an alarm against fraudulent individuals issuing fake summons to unsuspecting taxpayers.
These summonses, complete with Document Identification Numbers (DIN), may appear authentic at first glance, but it has been confirmed that DGGI has not issued DINs for these entities. To combat this rising issue, DGGI is actively taking measures, including reporting and filing complaints with the police against those responsible for generating and sending these deceptive summonses.
To safeguard against such fraudulent activities, CBIC had previously issued Circular No. 122/41/2019-GST on 5th November 2019, emphasizing the importance of generating and quoting DIN on communications from CBIC officers to taxpayers.
To assist taxpayers in verifying the legitimacy of any communication, including summonses, the CBIC recommends using the ‘VERIFY CBIC-DIN’ window on its website or the DIN Utility Search available on the online portal of the Directorate of Data Management (DDM), CBIC.
Taxpayers who receive suspicious or potentially fake summonses from DGGI/CBIC are urged to promptly report them to the relevant jurisdictional DGGI/CBIC office for verification. This proactive approach ensures that necessary action can be taken against those responsible for perpetrating these fraudulent activities.
