CA becomes First Victim of Pune Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outbreak, 111 Cases within 3 Weeks

A 41 Year Old Chartered Accountant (CA) at Pune has passed away, being the first casualty of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) Outbreak that has affected over 111 individuals within the past three weeks.

Reportedly, this event follows a report of the state health department confirming a casualty at Solapur due to GBS. Prakash Abitkar, the State Health Minister of Maharashtra, in a press meet told the media that it is a confirmed case of GBS. With the first case being reported on the 9th of January, 101 cases were reported till January 25th. 17 patients are still on ventilator support, while a ray of hope beams through the distress by the discharge of Seven patients.

The Central government has formed a team of experts and dispatched them to Pune to review the situation. The high-level multi-disciplinary team, comprising experts from Delhi and Bengaluru, will implement public health measures in the city.

The family of CA said that on January 9, he had a bout of diarrhoea, for which he took medicine for it. On January 14, he, along with his family, left their hometown, Solapur. "He felt better after medication. He even drove to Solapur. On Jan 17, he began to feel weak again. The next day, we admitted him to hospital," a relative told The Times of India.

Despite initial recovery in the ICIJ, the patient's condition worsened, leading to his death after six days of treatment. Doctors at the hospital confirmed the diagnosis of CBS, administering nerve-conduction tests and starting treatment according to medical protocols. "He responded well initially but his condition worsened again, characterized by weakness in the limbs and total paralysis," a doctor from the hospital said. [Source: Financial Express]
