Judge Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court will be sent to  Allahabad High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium.  The ruling comes after a fire at the judge's home that reportedly resulted in rescuers recovering a sizable sum of cash.

Before issuing the proposal, the Collegium convened two separate meetings on March 20 and 24 in an unusual action.  According to the official announcement posted on the Supreme Court's website, "The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meetings held on March 20 and 24, 2025, has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."

Justice Yashwant Varma was born in 1969, graduated with a law degree from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh, and became an advocate in 1992.  He held positions as Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh and Special Counsel for the Allahabad High Court during his career.  Before being named an Additional Judge of the High Court in October 2014, he was named a Senior Advocate in 2013.

He was appointed a permanent judge in February 2017 and then moved to the Delhi High Court, where he began serving on October 11, 2021.  The Collegium's recommendation to return him to the Allahabad High Court has finally ended his time in Delhi.

The circumstances surrounding the purported cash recovery and its impact on the Collegium's action have come under scrutiny following the Supreme Court's ruling.  However, no formal announcement about any continuing investigation into the situation has been made.
