CBDT Approves IIIT Hyderabad for Tax Benefits u/s 35 for Scientific Research

The Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT) through Notification No. 125/2024 dated 2nd December 2024 approved the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad ( IIITH ) for income tax benefits under Section 35 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This recognition allows the institution to benefit from its scientific research activities.

According to the notification, the approval categorizes IIIT-H as a “University, College, or other Institution” eligible for tax deductions for scientific research. The recognition comes under the provisions of Rules 5C and 5E of the Income Tax Rules, 1962.

The notification is effective from the current financial year (2024-25) and will remain applicable for the assessment years 2025-26 to 2029-30. The Ministry of Finance has clarified that the retrospective implementation of this approval will not adversely impact any individual or entity.

The notification was issued under the authority of Castro Jayaprakash T, Under Secretary and published in the official gazette.
