CBDT notifies Income Tax Exemption to ‘National Mission for Clean Ganga’ u/s 10(46) of Income Tax Act [Read Notification]

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), vide notification no. S.O. 1545(E) dated 26th March 2024 has officially declared the ‘National Mission for Clean Ganga’ as eligible under clause (46) of section 10 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

The following income of the National Mission for Clean Ganga has been exempted from income tax :

  1. Grants-in-Aid received from Government of India; and
  2. Interest earned on bank deposits.

This notification shall be effective subject to the conditions that National Mission for Clean Ganga, New Delhi –

  1. shall not engage in any commercial activity;
  2. activities and the nature of the specified income shall remain unchanged throughout the financial years; and
  3. shall file return of income in accordance with the provision of clause (g) of sub-section (4C) of section 139 of the Income tax Act, 1961.

This notification shall be deemed to have been applied for assessment years 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 relevant for the financial years 2020-2021, 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 respectively.

It is also certified that no person is being adversely affected by giving retrospective effect to this notification.
