The Chartered Accountant (CA) Butchibabu Gorantla was arrested on Tuesday (7th February 2023) for being Non-coopertive towards the questioning procedure of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and produced before the court. He was the former Chartered Accountant of Kalvakuntla Kavitha, daughter of Telangana Chief Minister (CM) K. Chandrashekara Rao.

As seen by the reports, he was detained because of his alleged involvement in the creation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy, which resulted in wrongful gains for wholesale and retail licensees in Hyderabad and their beneficial owners under the Delhi Excise Policy for the years 2021–2022.

The arrested CA was charged by the CBI with participating in many criminal conspiracies to obtain undue benefits by evading the provisions of the  policy.

The city’s alcohol distribution system was altered by the Delhi Excise Policy 2021–22, which went into effect in November of last year. As a result of the government’s exit from the industry, only private operators are now permitted to operate liquor stores.

He was summoned to the headquarters at Delhi as part of the inquiry and the CBI also questioned and recorded the statement of Kalvakuntla Kavitha, a Member of Legislative Council with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). at her residence.

Recently, Kavitha refuted all the allegations put forward by the Enforcement Department as the irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case accused AAP communications chief Vijay Nair of receiving kickbacks to the tune of Rs 100 crore from the “South Group”, allegedly comprising individuals including her.

Following the CBI’s charge sheet, Vijay Nair reportedly received hawala channel transactions worth Rs 20–30 crore from South Indian liquor producers in order to take use of his position in the Delhi government to push the illegal aim of monopolisation.

Gorantala was remanded in CBI custody by the court until February 11th. Additionally, the CBI maintained in court that they have whatsapp communications that were recovered from seized mobile devices, which is more than sufficient proof to support the accusations made against the accused about the conspiracy.
