According to the CBI, they registered a case on March 28, 2025, after receiving a complaint from a person who was trying to get a refund of Rs. 1,33,000 from the GST department.

The complainant said the CGST Superintendent had demanded 8 to 10% of the refund amount as a bribe. After some discussion, the officer agreed to take Rs. 13,000 to process the refund.

The CBI planned a trap to catch the culprits. When the private person came to collect the bribe on behalf of the CGST officer, CBI officials caught him red-handed. Later, both the private individual and the CGST Superintendent were taken into custody.

CBI officials said that the investigation in the case is still going on.

Just days earlier, on March 21, 2025, the CBI arrested a GST Superintendent posted in Medak, Telangana, for demanding a bribe of Rs. 10,000 and accepting Rs. 8,000. The bribe was allegedly sought to revoke the suspension of the complainant’s GSTIN, which had been deactivated due to non-filing of tax returns.

The officer was caught red-handed at his office under the Medchal Commissionerate. Following his arrest, CBI teams conducted searches at multiple locations in Medak, Hyderabad, and Jehanabad (Bihar), recovering several incriminating documents.
