The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and a private person for accepting a bribe of Rs. 25 lakh. According to the CBI, the officer had demanded a total bribe of Rs. 45 lakh from the complainant in return for giving favourable treatment in matters related to the Income Tax Department. The complainant told CBI that the officer, through a private person, had threatened him with serious legal action, heavy fines, and harassment if the bribe was not paid.
The CBI registered a case on May 31, 2025, after receiving the complaint. To catch the accused, the CBI laid a trap. The private individual was caught red-handed while taking Rs. 25 lakh from the complainant. This payment was made at the government officer’s residence in Mohali, Punjab. Soon after, CBI officers arrested the IRS officer at his home in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

Both the officer and the private person have been arrested and will be produced in court.
Meanwhile, CBI teams have conducted searches at multiple locations connected to the accused in Delhi, Punjab, and Mumbai. The searches are aimed at gathering more evidence, such as documents, financial records, and digital data related to the bribe and other possible illegal activities.
CBI officials said that the investigation is still going on, and more details may come out as they examine the evidence. This incident has raised serious concerns, especially because the accused officer held a senior post in a department that directly deals with taxpayers.

In a similar case last month, the CBI arrested a senior official of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in Hyderabad for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 10 lakh to clear pending claims of a private firm. The official was caught red-handed during a trap laid by the CBI, and investigations later revealed a larger network of corruption within the department.
