The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ) has made a significant move to support the agricultural sector by issuing notification no. 46/2024-Customs on 22nd October 2024. This notification announces the reduction of the export duty on various rice varieties from 10% to ‘Nil’.
This change is particularly beneficial for rice producers and exporters, as it aims to enhance the competitiveness of Indian rice in the international market.

Under the revised notification, the export duty has been eliminated on several rice categories, including rice in the husk ( also known as paddy or rough rice ), husked ( brown ) rice, and parboiled rice.
Previously, the Ministry of Finance’s earlier notification ( No. 44/2024-Customs ) dated 27th September 2024, which had introduced a 10% export duty on various rice types. The previous notification included rice in the husk, husked rice, and parboiled rice as taxable categories. Importantly, it exempted semi-milled and wholly-milled rice—except for parboiled and Basmati rice—from any export duties.
