The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ) has notified the rate changes to the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) regime as recommended by the 53rd GST Council meeting held earlier has proposed a uniform GST rate of 12% on various goods, including milk cans, carton boxes, and sprinklers.
Milk Cans
The GST Council has introduced a uniform 12% GST rate on all types of milk cans, irrespective of the material—be it steel, iron, or aluminium. This rate will be split into 6% Central GST ( CGST ) and 6% State GST ( SGST ).
Carton Boxes and Cases
All carton boxes and cases made of corrugated or non-corrugated paper or paperboard will now attract a 12% GST rate. This measure is expected to benefit industries relying heavily on such packaging materials, notably apple growers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Sprinklers
The council also recommended a 12% GST rate on all types of sprinklers, including fire water sprinklers, which has now been notified.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ) formalised these changes through Notification No.02/2024 – Central Tax ( Rate ) dated July 12, 2024. The revised rates will come into effect from July 15, 2024.
This notification further amends Notification No.1/2017-Central Tax ( Rate ), dated June 28, 2017, incorporating the new tax brackets and entries.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that these changes support critical sectors like agriculture, dairy, and safety equipment manufacturing.
Similar notifications have been passed under the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 ( IGST Act ), and the Union Territory Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 ( UTGST Act ).
