The dogs including Pitbull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler prohibited from import.

CBIC Prohibits Import – Ferocious Breeds of Dog – TAXSCAN
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued Instruction No. 05/2024-Customs on March 14, 2024, prohibiting imports of certain ferocious breeds of dogs into India. The board has instructed the jurisdictional officers to prohibit such imports.
This instruction comes in response to Office Memorandum (OM) F.No. L-11010(1)/251/2021-Trade (E-20671) dated March 12, 2024, received from the DC (Trade), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD).
The identified breeds, including mixed and cross breeds, deemed ferocious and hence prohibited for import, breeding, selling as pet dogs, and other purposes, are as follows:
- Pitbull Terrier
- Tosa Inu
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Fila Brasileiro
- Dogo Argentino
- American Bulldog
- Boerboel
- Kangal
- Central Asian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka)
- Caucasian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka)
- South Russian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka)
- Tornjak
- Sarplaninac
- Japanese Tosa and Akita
- Mastiffs (boerbulls)
- Rottweiler
- Terriers
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Wolf dogs
- Canario
- Akbash dog
- Moscow Guard dog
- Cane corso
- Every dog commonly known as a Ban Dog (or Bandog)
The CBIC has requested concerned authorities to sensitize officers under their jurisdiction regarding the prohibition on the import of the above-mentioned breeds of dogs. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential risks associated with ferocious dog breeds and ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
