The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), in a recent tweet reminded the manufacturers registered under Central Excise Act, 1944 to “Please note, the Due Date for Payment of Excise Duty for the goods cleared during the month of March, 2023 is 31st March”.
The Tweet in the official Twitter handle further stated that, “Non-payment of excise duty on time
will attract interest & penalty.”
Users can make online payment of excise duty and service tax through Automation of Central Excise and Service Tax (ACES) by Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). To make online payment, users are required to have a net banking account with any of the banks enlisted with CBEC.
To make the payment, The initial step is for the user to log in to the Service Tax/Central Excise portal, which is cbic-gst.gov.in, using their login credentials. Once logged in, the user needs to generate a challan and select the “Make Payment” option, which will then redirect them to the ICEGATE portal for additional processing.
Where any duty of excise has not been levied or paid or has been short levied or short paid or erroneously refunded, the person liable to pay duty as determined under section 11A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, is in addition to the duty, liable to pay interest at the rate of 20 per cent per annum till 11 May 2000, 24 per cent with effect from 12 May 2000, 15 percent with effect from 13 May 2002 and 13 percent from 12 September 2003 under the relevant sections of the foregoing Act.
Where duty has not been paid or short paid with the intent to evade duty or in contravention of the provisions of the Act or Rules or notifications issued thereunder, penal provisions exist under Section 11AC of the Central Excise Act and Rules 25 to 27 of the Central Excise Rules, 2002.
