The Central Government on Wednesday notified the Debts Recovery Tribunal (Procedure) Amendment Rules, 2020, which seek to amend the Debts Recovery Tribunal (Procedure) Rules, 1993.

“In the Debts Recovery Tribunal (Procedure) Rules, 1993, in rule 19, after the word “Second”, the words “and Fourth” may be inserted.

The amendment, in fact, brings forth a change in the working days of the Debt Recovery Tribunal. The office of the Tribunal will now be closed on Fourth Saturdays as well.

Prior to this Amendment, the Tribunal was open on all days except Second Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The office hours remain unchanged, i.e. from 10 am to 6 pm and only urgent work is admitted after 4:30 pm on any given working day.

Moreover, interestingly, the original rules stipulated for all Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays to be non-working days for the Tribunal.

However, in the year 2016, these Rules were amended to include all Saturdays as working days for the Tribunal except for Second Saturdays.
