Central Govt appoints Former IRS Officers as Special Counsels for Two Years; Officers Lists Out

The appointment is established for a duration of two years from the date of this order, extending up to January 2, 2026.

The Central Government is designating former IRS officers as Special Counsel to represent the Department before CESTAT and other quasi-judicial authorities in cases that involve substantial questions of law, substantial revenue, or matters of significant nature with broader implications. This appointment is established for a duration of two years from the date of this order, extending up to January 2, 2026.

Half-yearly reports, following the format specified in the letter dated August 29, 2006, should be submitted to the Board regarding the number of cases allocated to the special counsels and the outcomes achieved, highlighting the contribution of the Counsels.

Additionally, it is emphasised that an appropriate undertaking should be obtained from the Counsels, affirming that they or the affiliated firm (if applicable) will not provide advice, hold briefs, or represent any private party against the Department before any Authority, Tribunal, or Board in matters or issues similar to those assigned to them by the department.
