According to a notification from the Central Government with reference to F. No. A-12023(1)/15/2016-Admn.III (LA), Vice President G S Pannu's term as President of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has been extended for an additional 6 months with effect from 6th September 2023. Nevertheless, the position's leadership may undergo a change once the ministry identifies a suitable regular candidate to fit the role.
According to the notification “In continuation to the Government of India, Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Legal Affairs’ Notification No. A-12023(1)/15/2016-Admin. III (LA) dated the 07th March, 2023, published in the Gazette of India - Extraordinary, the Central Government extends the tenure of Shri G.S. Pannu, Vice-President, Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), as President of the Tribunal in officiating capacity for a further period of six months, with effect from 6th of September, 2023, or till the regular President is appointed, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.”
On September 30, the Central Government extended the service of CBDT Chairperson Nitin Gupta by nine months on a "contract basis," which coincided with his originally scheduled retirement date.
The government order stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted approval for the reappointment of Gupta as the CBDT Chairman on a contract basis. This reappointment is effective from October 1, 2023, until June 30, 2024, or until further notice, whichever comes first. This extension is made in accordance with relaxation of recruitment rules and follows the standard terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers.
