Justice Manmohan’s appointment raises the Supreme Court’s working strength to 33 judges, one short of the sanctioned capacity of 34. The move fills one of the vacancies left by the retirements of Justice Hima Kohli and former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud bringing greater representation to the apex court from the Delhi High Court.
In its recommendation, the Supreme Court Collegium explained Justice Manmohan’s seniority. He is ranked second in the all India seniority list of High Court judges and is the senior-most judge from the Delhi High Court. His elevation shows the continuity of senior judicial expertise at the highest level.
Justice Manmohan, 61, has had an illustrious legal journey. Born to the late Jagmohan, a bureaucrat-turned-politician, he earned his LL.B from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1987. After enrolling as an advocate the same year, he practiced before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
Justice Manmohan primarily practiced in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court, specializing in diverse areas such as civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2003.

With his expertise in tax law and constitutional matters, Justice Manmohan’s elevation is expected to strengthen the Supreme Court’s ability to handle complicated and high-profile cases.
Justice Manmohan is set to take his oath of office shortly entering the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
