The Ministry of Finance has announced a vacancy circular for the selection of Member (Technical) posts in the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal ( CESTAT ). There are two vacancies, one existing from February 1, 2025, and one anticipated from August 17, 2025.
The principal bench of CESTAT is situated at New Delhi and its other Benches are situated at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Chandigarh and Hyderabad. A person, on selection, may be posted at any of the Benches of the Tribunal.

QUALIFICATION
The appointment of candidates to the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) is governed by the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021, along with the Tribunal (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021 and its Amendments of 2023.
To be eligible for appointment as a Technical Member, a candidate must:
- Belong to the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise Group ‘A’),
- Have held the post of Principal Commissioner of Customs or Central Excise, or an equivalent/higher post, and
- Have performed judicial, quasi-judicial, or adjudicatory functions for at least three years.
Additionally, as per the 2023 Amendment, a person who is or has been a Member (Technical) in CESTAT is eligible for re-appointment.
AGE LIMIT
A person who has not completed the age of 50 years shall not be eligible for appointment as a Member. The cut-off date for considering eligibility of the candidates against the aforesaid vacancies will be 30.06.2025.
SALARY AND TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
A Member is entitled to a salary of ₹2,25,000/-, along with allowances and benefits equivalent to those of a Group 'A' Government of India officer at the same pay level. If the appointee is already drawing a pension, their salary will be reduced by the gross pension amount.

As per the Second Amendment Rules, 2023, a serving Judge of the Supreme Court/High Court or a serving member of an organised service must resign or take voluntary retirement before joining the Tribunal. Pension, Provident Fund, and Gratuity are not admissible for service rendered in the Tribunal. The term of office is four years or until the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.
PROCEDURE OF SELECTION
A Search-Cum-Selection Committee will assess the suitability of candidates by evaluating their qualifications and experience, and shortlist them for personal interaction. Final selection will be based on an overall evaluation by the Committee, taking into account the candidate’s credentials and performance during the interaction.

Eligible and willing officers must apply through proper channels. The application must include:
(i) Bio-data in the prescribed format (Annexure-I)
(ii) Employer’s certificate as per Annexure-II
(iii) Attested CR/APAR dossier for the last five years
(iv) Cadre clearance
(v) Integrity and vigilance clearance (Annexure-III)
(vi) Details of any major/minor penalties imposed in the past 10 years

OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE NOTED
No TA/DA will be provided for attending the interview/personal interaction. Candidates must make their own travel arrangements. The advertisement and prescribed application form can be downloaded from the websites of the Department of Revenue (dor.gov.in) and CESTAT (cestat.gov.in).
Applications received after the due date or without the required annexures/documents are liable to be rejected at the Committee’s discretion.
