According to DTNext, the scandal came to light after a trader named Mohammed Ghouse from Old Washermenpet filed a complaint about the theft of Rs 15 lakh near Triplicane on December 16, 2024. During the investigation, police arrested two Chennai Police officers and three I-T officials, including inspector Damodharan, officer Pradeep, and superintendent Prabhu. However, the case took a surprising turn when police discovered that the same group was involved in another extortion incident in Thousand Lights just a week earlier, on December 11.

In the Thousand Lights case, the accused had taken Rs 40 lakh from a victim but returned Rs 20 lakh, possibly to avoid raising suspicions. Following this discovery, the police filed a new case at the Thousand Lights police station and identified three Sales Tax officers—Suresh (49), Sathee, and Babu (41)—as key suspects. Suresh and Babu, who had been hiding for over two weeks, were finally caught on Monday, while Sathee is still on the run.
During questioning, the arrested officers admitted their involvement in both robberies, revealing a well-organized extortion network. The police also re-arrested the I-T officers and police personnel in early February 2025 for their connection to the Thousand Lights case. A court has refused to grant bail to the three I-T officers involved in the Triplicane incident, highlighting the seriousness of the charges.
