China has urged India to stand with it against the United States, accusing the U.S. of misusing trade policies by sharply increasing tariffs on Chinese goods. The appeal came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major hike in tariffs, bringing the total duties on Chinese imports to 104%, triggering fresh tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Yu Jing, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling the recent U.S. actions an “abuse of tariffs” and said that such trade practices hurt not just China, but also developing countries like India. She pointed out that the U.S. is undermining global trade and warned that developing economies are being deprived of their right to grow.

“China and India are the two largest developing countries, and we should stand together to oppose unilateralism and protect our development rights,” Yu Jing said. She described the China-India trade relationship as “complementary and mutually beneficial” and called for joint efforts to safeguard the global trade system, particularly with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.

Yu also stated that China’s role in the global economy, stating that the country’s stable economic growth, strong manufacturing base, and focus on innovation contribute to nearly 30% of the world’s economic growth each year. She added that China is committed to globalization and fair trade, and that it will continue working with the international community to protect the principles of multilateralism.

The remarks came just after President Trump announced a steep 34% new tariff on Chinese goods. When China responded with a matching 34% duty on American products, Trump responded with an even larger 50% increase, pushing total U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports to 104%. Trump defended the move, saying it would bring manufacturing back to the U.S., and claimed the U.S. was earning “almost $2 billion a day” from tariffs.

Economists and industry leaders have raised concerns that these rising tariffs could increase prices for American consumers, disrupt global supply chains, and lead to more trade conflicts. U.S. stock markets also fell in response to the news, signaling investor worry over a potential full-scale trade war.

India now finds itself in a delicate position. On one hand, it has strong economic ties with the United States, and the two countries have been deepening cooperation in trade, defense, and technology. On the other hand, China remains a key trading partner and a major player in Asia’s regional economy.
