In a proactive move, officers belonging to the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate in Delhi took decisive action based on gathered intelligence. They executed a search operation that resulted in the discovery of a significant quantity of foreign-origin cigarettes. The retrieved stash amounted to 5,48,800 cigarette sticks, with an estimated value of approximately Rs. 55.23 lakh.

The cigarettes seized encompassed various brands, including Platinum Seven, Davidoff, Dunhill, and Mond. Notably, these confiscated cigarettes lacked the mandatory pictorial health warnings, which is a key indication of potential illegal importation or smuggling activities. The absence of these warnings implies a violation of the ‘Cigarettes & other Tobacco Products (Packaging & Labelling) Amendment Rules, 2022.’

The rules and regulations mentioned are in place to ensure that tobacco products carry health warnings to inform consumers about the associated health risks. The violation of these rules suggests an attempt to circumvent Customs Duty, a serious offence in the context of importing goods.

As a consequence of the operation, an individual was apprehended under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962. This section likely pertains to offences related to the evasion of duties or smuggling activities. However, it’s mentioned that the individual was subsequently released on bail, indicating that legal proceedings are still ongoing. This release could be temporary, allowing the individual to remain free while the investigation continues.

The ongoing investigations signify a commitment to thoroughly examine the case, aiming to uncover any potential networks involved in illegal importation or smuggling. The authorities are likely delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding the acquisition, distribution, and potential connections of the seized cigarettes.
