The central government has assigned Ajay Seth, the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), additional responsibility as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue. The move comes after the incumbent Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term.

An official government notification stated:

“The Competent Authority has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department of Revenue to Shri Ajay Seth, IAS, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs upon relinquishment of the charge of the post by Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS, till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Ajay Seth, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1987 Karnataka cadre, has held key positions in the finance sector, including work related to budget formulation, tax policy, foreign investments, public-private partnerships, and economic development.

His new role as Revenue Secretary will place him in charge of tax administration, policy implementation, and financial enforcement agencies, while he continues his existing responsibilities in the DEA.

The appointment follows the selection of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as SEBI’s new Chairman. Pandey, who previously served as Revenue Secretary, is set to replace Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure at SEBI ended on February 28, 2025.

With the Union Budget and key taxation policies in focus, assigning an experienced officer like Ajay Seth ensures stability in the Ministry of Finance. Overseeing both economic affairs and revenue matters may help align fiscal and taxation policies effectively.

This is an interim arrangement, and a permanent Revenue Secretary is expected to be appointed soon.
