The Directorate General of Foreign Trade ( DGFT ), through its notification No. 26/2024-2025 dated 3rd September 2024, has granted an additional 12-month extension for the export of Red Sanders Heart Wood in log form.

This extension allows the Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department of the Government of Odisha more time to finalise the export process.

The extension has been made under the authority provided by Section 3 and Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, in accordance with the provisions of the updated Foreign Trade Policy (2023). It amends previous notifications from October 2021 and November 2022, enabling the Odisha government to complete the export of this highly valuable wood within the extended timeframe.

Red Sanders, a rare and precious species of wood, is in high demand worldwide, particularly in countries such as China and Japan. Known for its use in the manufacture of furniture, medicines, and musical instruments, the export of Red Sanders is tightly controlled by the Indian government due to its endangered status. Only government-authorised bodies are allowed to export limited quantities of the wood, and strict timelines are imposed to regulate the trade.

The current extension provides Odisha’s Forest Department with the necessary time to carefully manage the export while complying with national and international environmental regulations.
