The Ministry of Commerce & Industry issued Notification No. 61/2024-25 dated March 7, 2025, announcing the lifting of the export ban on Broken Rice (HS Code: 1006 40 00). The Directorate General of Foreign Trade ( DGFT ) has amended the export policy from "Prohibited" to "Free", allowing exporters to ship Broken Rice without restrictions.

The prohibition was initially imposed to ensure domestic food security, but with improved production and supply conditions, the government has decided to relax it.

According to the notification, the amendment is made under Section 3 and Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, and is aligned with Foreign Trade Policy guidelines. The policy change is effective immediately and was issued with the approval of the government.

The decision is likely to have huge trade implications, particularly benefiting rice-exporting companies and agricultural producers. Global markets, particularly China, Indonesia, and African nations, which rely on India’s Broken Rice for animal feed and ethanol production are expected to respond positively to the move.

This notification was signed by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of Foreign Trade ( DGFT ).
