Chapter 1, Paragraph 2, Sub-paragraph (j) of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) [FTDR] Act, 1992, defines "services" as any type of service made available to potential users, including all tradable services listed under the General Agreement on Trade in Services that was signed between India and other parties to the Agreement. It was stipulated that this definition would not apply to the taxation domain.

The given service export classification nomenclature is also defined in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

For eBRCs created on or after May 1, 2025, the Directorate is adding a new field called "Mode of Export of Services" to the eBRC format for the Services Export category. During the certification process, exporters certifying eBRCs connected to IRMs must provide the applicable export service mode. The purpose of adding this field is to increase the precision and granularity of services export data. Additionally, under WTO GATS, this revision brings India's data collection policy into compliance with international standards.

Additionally, it was mentioned that the four modes of services trade listed under GATS match to the new field called "Mode of Export of Services." Exporters can submit a service ticket on the DGFT website under Services -> DGFT Helpdesk Service or call the toll-free number to reach the DGFT Helpdesk for assistance.
