The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has issued a notification amending the import policy of platinum under HS Code 7110 in Chapter 71 of ITC (HS) 2022, Schedule – 1 (Import Policy).
As per the notification, the import policy of certain categories of platinum has been revised from "Free" to "Restricted," except for platinum alloy containing 99% or more purity by weight of platinum, which will continue to be freely importable.

The notification reads:
"Import Policy of Platinum covered under ITC (HS) 71101110, 71101120 and 71101900 is revised from 'Free' to 'Restricted' except for platinum alloy of 99% or more purity by weight of Platinum."
This move is expected to impact platinum traders, manufacturers, and industries relying on platinum imports.

Effect of the Notification
This change introduces import restrictions on unwrought platinum, platinum powder, and other forms of platinum, requiring importers to obtain government approval. Platinum alloys with at least 99% purity remain exempt from these restrictions and can be freely imported.
The notification has been issued with the approval of the Minister of Commerce & Industry and signed by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of Foreign Trade & Ex-officio Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
