DRI seizes 1.92 kg of Cocaine worth Rs. 26.5 crore Smuggled

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized the import of 1.92 kg Cocaine by way of concealment inside the thermocol balls.  The seized cocaine has a worth of 26.5 crores.

The DRI has discovered an entirely novel way of smuggling drugs (cocaine) into India through the courier route. The cocaine was purportedly hidden inside thermocol balls that were allegedly used to cushion the stated products.

An import courier shipment was intercepted and examined by DRI officers at the New Courier Terminal in New Delhi based on particular intelligence developed by the DRI. This led to the recovery of 1922 grams of cocaine with an estimated illicit global market value of Rs 26.5 crore.

The two boxes carrying the “Table Centre (decorative object)” were delivered by courier from Sao Paulo, Brazil. A preliminary assessment of the shipment showed that the two boxes each contained a crystal glass decorative bowl together with thousands of thermocol balls, each with a diameter of around two centimetres, to protect the glassware from any harm.

However, a close inspection of the thermocol balls revealed that some of them appeared to be a little bit heavier (just 1-2 grams) than the others. As a result, heavier thermocol balls—about 10% of the total thermocol balls—were separated according to weight.

When the 972 heavier thermocol balls were broken open, it was discovered that they were hiding tiny white powder balls encased in transparent, ultra-thin polythene.

The test results for the aforementioned white powder indicated that it is  cocaine. As a result, 1922 grams of cocaine had been found and seized overall under the NDPS Act of 1985. The investigation is progressing.

Recently, the Air Cargo (Exports) Customs, Delhi, has destroyed 69.876 kg drugs covered under schedule to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances or NDPS Act, 1985 at the Centralised Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility operated by SMS Water grace BMW Pvt Ltd.
