The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence ( DRI ) has seized 83.352 metric tons of Areca nuts valued at Rs. 5.71 Crore. The contraband, concealed under the guise of ‘BASE OIL’ in import documents, was being attempted to be smuggled into the country.

Upon examination of the containers, authorities discovered a staggering revelation: out of 738 drums inspected, 658 drums were found to contain Areca nuts in split form, while an additional 80 drums purportedly contained oily liquid, falsely declared as ‘Base Oil’. This deceptive tactic was employed by unscrupulous importers in an attempt to evade duty on the import of Areca Nuts.

By intercepting and exposing such attempts at mis-declaration and smuggling, the DRI reinforces its commitment to upholding the rule of law and preventing the circumvention of customs duties. The incident served as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by smuggling activities and the necessity for continuous vigilance and enforcement measures to combat them effectively. Authorities remain steadfast in their resolve to crack down on such illicit practices and ensure compliance with import regulations to safeguard the interests of the nation.

Recently, the DRI officers, acting on intelligence, intercepted seven shipments of “Electric Current/Potential Metres” declared as “Current Guiaor Machine” arriving from Hong Kong at the Foreign Post Office ( FPO ) in New Delhi. Upon closer inspection, these seemingly innocuous electric metres were found to be fully functional, equipped with genuine populated circuit boards. However, a preliminary examination raised suspicions due to their unusually heavy weight.
